“Sir, let us join Jackson,” you say. “We can win this battle.”

The captain yells in anger: “We retreat!”

“I am joining him!” you yell back, starting off toward Jackson’s unit.

Your captain hollers after you, “You will hang for this disobedience, Tanner!”

A Confederate soldier from the 4th Virginia Regiment

As you run across a field, bullets zip through the air. Something explodes behind you and you run even faster. Men lie dead or dying all around and you can smell the blood. You fall in with a group of Jackson’s men who are firing from behind a mound of earth. You join them in shooting and soon the Union soldiers who had been advancing are turning back.

General Jackson leads you and the others in pursuit. You shoot a fleeing Yankee, and he falls. The Union continues to retreat, and Jackson calls off the pursuit. You have far fewer men than they do and sooner or later they will realize they can turn you back.

Later, after returning to the camp, General Jackson himself shakes your hand and thanks you for your bravery. You have conflicting feelings. You are proud of yourself and thrilled that Jackson has recognized it. At the same time, you fear the horror of this war will haunt you for the rest of your life.
